Every Saona trip sails from the harbour at Bayahibe, roughly 70 km west, so a coach ride of around an hour and a half each way is part of the day. That is why a Saona excursion takes ten to twelve hours door to door and not the eight hours you might expect from the time on the water.

Outside those weeks a Samaná day trip is still worth doing for the El Limón waterfall, the mangroves of Los Haitises and Cayo Levantado, but there will be no whales. Since almost every tour can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead, booking early costs you nothing and protects the slot you want.

The calm side of the coast does: the reef-protected water off Bávaro, the shaded lagoons of the Ojos Indígenas, the shorter catamaran trips in the morning. The long day trips to Santo Domingo and Samaná are hard going, with very early pickups and hours in a vehicle.
