Every Saona trip sails from the harbour at Bayahibe, roughly 70 km west, so a coach ride of around an hour and a half each way is part of the day. That is why a Saona excursion takes ten to twelve hours door to door and not the eight hours you might expect from the time on the water.

The calm side of the coast does: the reef-protected water off Bávaro, the shaded lagoons of the Ojos Indígenas, the shorter catamaran trips in the morning. The long day trips to Santo Domingo and Samaná are hard going, with very early pickups and hours in a vehicle.
